I don’t take myself too seriously, but just so you know, I hold degrees in Management, Marketing, Brand Leadership and Visual Communication from Monash and Vega.
I see myself as a creative and a father. I love lighting and experimentation, i like pushing the envelope in my day-to-day life but i also like to be a little conservative in my approach. I’m very fond of cooking and the occasional PS3 game. There are few movies i’ve not seen but my favourite right now has to Serenity.
My family is everything to me. They have filled a huge empty space in my life and i thank the powers that be for bringing them into my life.
My career as a photographer began with a small Sony Cybershot that I carried around everywhere. I took photos that appealed to me and I would spend hours looking at them. I took images of friends and family, houses and cars, people I saw on the streets and whatever else took my fancy. I loved the freedom to capture things that I felt connected to, things I liked. I was always playing around with the settings on the camera and trying new ways of getting the picture I wanted and I slowly started to get a very vivid idea as to what I liked and how I shot my images.
I started my working career as a brand manager at a small agency. I loved it and worked long hours and tight deadlines to meet my client’s needs. I learnt about being a creative, and the compromises and sacrifices I would have to make to stay in the industry. I loved the buzz of the advertising industry, it felt like I had it in my blood… After I finished my Honours Degree in Brand Leadership, I found myself unsatisfied with my life and I longed for something more creative, more artistic, more me…
I bought myself a new camera in early 2005, my first DSLR, a Canon 350D. I loved it and took it everywhere. By now I was also doing a bit of work for friends and family who liked my style and thought I was really good. In early 2006 I booked my first wedding. It was a friend of the family, and a favor to the bride and groom. I arrived early, and shot the whole wedding and the reception. A few days later I got a call from one of the guests who loved my work and wanted me to shoot her wedding a few weeks later – I wanted to become a Photographer…
The body of my work is concentrated around a marriage of editorial, documentary and conceptual photography. These three styles get blended in an ever-evolving mixture of emotions and things that pluck my heart-strings. I don’t like using allot of equipment and I prefer to keep things simple and clean while I am shooting. I use small lights, large modifiers, natural light, flash and whatever else I need to get into a subject. Generally I go through a few different phases during a shoot and I will adapt and change my approach to suit the subject.
Even-though I am a bit of a nerd, I really love keeping the mood fresh and fun for my clients so I will always joke around and make a fool of myself while I am shooting just to keep things interesting. I specialize in shooting on-location. This means that I get to go to some of the world’s most interesting, and sometimes not so clean places. I love the different textures and colors in the world and I always try to envelop my clients in the environment, make them seem part of it, make it seem part of them.
When I shoot people on location, the environment is just as much a subject as the person in-front of my lens is. My clients will feel like I have taken them into a new world by just going around a corner they have never gone to, or into an alleyway they have never seen… this is where the real magic happens. There is no photoshop trick or bullet that defines my style. The most important thing to me is to get the shot right from the first frame I shoot, by using vibrant colors and textures, dramatic lighting, finding the best locations to shoot, and working with simple gear, I give myself the freedom to let my subject come to life.
It’s about consistency in my work, consistently evolving and growing and trying new things. I try not to get caught up in camera settings and apertures and so on, I know my technical stuff like the back of my hand this let’s me spend more time talking to my clients and making them feel comfortable and relaxed. I don’t claim to be an expert in my craft, nor do I walk around with a huge ego that needs to be satisfied. I am a firm believer and advocate for lifelong learning and it is with this mindset that I pickup my camera and create images that stay with people, images that speak not only to my client’s soul but mine also.
The most crucial part of any job for me is to build a strong relationship with my clients. They need to trust me, trust that I can do what I said I would do, trust that I will give them the results they want, trust that any investment made with me will be worthwhile…
